Nour’s World for social emotional learning

Discover our evidence-based learning solution for mental health and psychosocial support.

Nour’s World is an innovative ed-tech program that builds children’s emotional resilience and helps them overcome difficult emotions.

Children can apply this program anywhere – on a device, with their teacher, parent or caregiver – even if they cannot read.

This solution was developed jointly by Thaki and TNO, the Netherlands’ government innovation agency, funded by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency’s SBIR in Developing Markets Fund, and involving local organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the vision behind Nour’s World?

Stress and heavy emotions have detrimental effects on the neurobiological, emotional and social development of children. Currently, young children in Lebanon and the Middle East have limited access to science-based interventions that enhance their resilience. The aim of Nour’s World is to decrease the negative impact of difficult experiences and increase resilience in two ways. Firstly, to teach children, their teachers and parents/caregivers how to recognize and handle intense emotions, and secondly, to increase teachers’ and parents’/caregivers’ knowledge of heavy emotions in general so that they can provide an environment for children adaptive to their needs.

What is the science behind Nour’s World?

This program was built on an adaptation of a prior program, ‘Build your own Buddy’ (Bob), developed by TNO. Bob was originally designed and implemented in a face-to-face group format for communities in South Sudan. Through the generous support of the SBIR in Developing Markets fund the original ‘Bob; program was adapted in ‘Nour’ in four ways, namely:

  1. Digitally: from physical to digital resources
  2. Contextually: from Africa to the MENA region
  3. Linguistically: from English to Arabic language
  4. Functionally: from a fully facilitated program to a self-guided program

Rooted in science, the Nour program comprehensively integrates multiple theories and elements of practice across mental health:

  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT): a psycho-social intervention that focuses on challenging and changing cognitive distortions (such as thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes) and their associated behaviors to improve emotional regulation and develop personal coping strategies that target solving current problems.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): a psychotherapy treatment designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): an action-oriented approach to psychotherapy that aims to develop and expand psychological flexibility by accepting rather than avoiding negative emotions.
  • Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT): a therapeutic approach that views emotional awareness as central to influencing thoughts, decision making and future actions.
  • Psychomotor Therapy: a method that focuses on body signals such as tension, breathing, body sensations and posture. Experience through body and movement-oriented exercises is key.
  • Mindfulness: techniques that focus on being intensely aware of what one is sensing and
  • feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment. Practicing mindfulness involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind and help reduce stress.
